No world traveler can say they have seen it all until they have spent the day roaming around Rome. There simply is no other city in the world quite like it. Most other world capitals that can claim to have been the most important city on earth at one time or another are usually gone or unworthy of a visit, but not Rome. Between the ruins, the modern day city and, of course, The Vatican, Rome is a once in a lifetime trip that you may wish you could repeat again and again.

The idea that a city like Rome can’t be done on the cheap is a falsehood, although it is true that you will likely have a much better time if you can stay at a four or five star palace and eat where kings and queens do. It is the opinion of this reviewer that if you can’t go on vacation to have fun and spend money then there really is no point to going on vacation at all, and there is no city in the world where it is more fun to spend money than in Rome. From the towering hotels to the incredible restaurants, Rome has it all.

The key to enjoying yourself here is planning. Rome doesn’t have that perfect Western style grid layout that many Americans and even some Europeans have come to expect. You can be driving down a main avenue and suddenly find yourself staring a famous ruin right in the face. Roads curve at extreme angles here, and if you’ve never been in a taxi anywhere in Italy before, you might want to say a short prayer before you do.

Taxis are a huge part of getting around here, but luckily, the public transit is quite good as well. Even with the solid public transit system in place, you will be expected to walk to many of the best tourist attractions here, which isn’t so bad, but when you consider the sheer size of Rome, you will need to plan ahead. Consult a travel guide or the concierge at your hotel to plan out walking tours so you don’t find yourself doubling back over yourself any more than you have to. Luckily, if you do get tired, there are incredible cafés everywhere, and when it gets right down to it, if you see more pastries and cups of coffee or glasses of wine in Rome than you do monuments and ruins, no one is going to chide you.

Speaking of food, there is so much of it here, you might be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of choice. There are bad restaurants here, but you might have to search long and hard to find one. That means that if you walk past a particular place and it catches your fancy, go for it. Rome is a city that is all about following your heart. Much like Paris, millions have fallen in love here and millions will in the future. It’s time to see what fate has in store for you here.
